Martin County leaders look into algae fighting technology

Gov. Rick Scott declared a state of emergency for seven counties because of harmful algae blooms.

The state is now offering a $3 million grant to help local governments.

Martin County is one of the seven.

Martin County Ecosystem Specialist Dianne Hughes is busy trying to figure out how to implement technology to fight algae blooms.

She says she's looking at two vendors. One system is an in-water air curtain.

"We are looking at eliminating harmful algal blooms from getting into dead-end canals and another one vacuuming up blooms," said Hughes.

Hughes is looking into certain locations similar to Central Marine.

"We want to see if it can help us implement some of these technologies," said Hughes.
